I use my DA gallery not as a standard portfolio i.e. only the very best shots - for that I am building up a DA portfolio (see left) and also my Musecube portfolios will, when I finally manage to tidy them up, be showing only my best work. And of course my 'book' only has the best of the best!
The DA gallery is different. I show here a lot of work that will not necessarily be included in my portfolio, to help me decide what I should regard as the best. So bear with me if the quality of the images is sometimes uneven.

My favs are all very different, but all very inspiring. I hope you will enjoy them as much as I do.

The model as performer

Wed Nov 18, 2009, 4:44 AM
Following my ealier journal Unbearable Lightness :iconunbearable-lightness: expanded on it in her blog [link] stimulating a very interesting discussion, which I truly appreciate (thanks UL for your thoughtful comments). Joseph Crachiola in his comment posted on UL's blog quoted Richard Avedon and I would like to repeat the quote here as it really strikes a chord
"A portrait is not a likeness. The moment an emotion or fact is transformed into a photograph it is no longer a fact but an opinion .... All photographs are accurate. None of them is the truth."
Still, many photographers would like to hang on to the idea of the truth of the moment. And surely in the moment of a shot there is a truth, though not necessarily The Truth. My post was not so much about this notion of truth, it was more about the model and what she thinks and does. About the model as subject, the model's performance. There is a link, no doubt, to the discussion on art and artifice developed by UL, but my question remains slightly different.
Sometimes answers come to us unexpectedly, totally out of the blue.
Quite accidentally I came across the self-portraits by Vera von Lehndorff, while googling something else. Vera Lehndorff otherwise known as Veruschka was famous in the 1960s for being one of the first supermodels. Very tall and striking she worked with Avedon and Penn and graced endless magazine covers till she turned her back on fashion following a quarrel with a Vogue editor who wanted her to "update" her look. And she began a new career as an installation artist and body painter. More recently, she collaborated with a photographer, Andreas Hubertus Ilse, on a series of self-portraits performed by her, a "retrospective revitalization of her alter ego Veruschka". I cannot post any thumbnail from the exhibition but you can visit the online gallery here [link] and be truly amazed.
I think this is the first time that I have ever come across an official acknowledgment of the model as performer. Verouschka has done much to bring back attention to the notion of the model as subject. As Gary Indiana writes, in his 2008 interview with Veruschka "great models can be all things to all people. Veruschka is a true artist because she can be all things all by herself" [link]

I am a classic model (an euphemism for older model), of agency standard. I am with an agency, more than one in fact, but I mostly work independently. I am versatile, my look allows me to be so: I do commercial shoots, paid shoots for photographers' portfolios, stock photography, some fashion and also creative collaborative work. For the latter I will do TFP/TFCD but it has to be a very interesting idea, the photographer must have proven experience and the shoot DOES have to involve some collaboration. I welcome mutual challenges and ideas that can be expanded upon. I love doing work that is dynamic,multi-layered and multi-referenced and that gives me sufficient scope to perform as a model. I have a strong dance background - I was trained in Graham and other dance techniques, and performed in my twenties, later becoming involved in other dance and performance related activities. I have an unusually flexible, well toned, athletic body, thanks to years of movement and yoga practice - I am addicted to Bikram yoga, of which I am a fairly advanced practitioner - and some martial art training, so I can do very complex poses. I also double up as a life model, so holding poses for long is never a problem for me. I live in London but am happy to travel for the right shoot. I love modelling, I came to it relatively late in life and took to it like a duck to water. I believe I can bring to a shoot great poise, elegance, confidence, maturity, sensuality, intelligence and imagination. Contact me with a note if you are interested in working with me.
I have access to a fully equipped, well lit studio in a converted residential home close to where I live so if you want to shoot with me and are not from London, location would not be a problem.
